JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Safety Specialist will provide overall Health & Safety support to various stakeholders managing isolation and quarantine space, will support campus wide safety initiatives, will respond to emergencies, and perform other safety and compliance related projects, as assigned. This is a full-time one-year temporary benefited position.

JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Provide day-to-day safety support for Health Services and work alongside health care and other support staff managing isolation and quarantine space.
  • Transport students utilizing a university shuttle from various locations to isolation.
  • Conduct routine enhanced cleaning and disinfection in potentially contaminated COVID-19 areas, as directed.
  • Must be able to don and doff a wide range of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR), N95's, protective suit, and gloves. Will require HAZMAT entry into potentially COVID-19 contaminated areas to retrieve personal belongings and other needed supplies for students in isolation.
  • Under the direction of an EHS Supervisor, respond to emergency situations and HAZMAT response in areas potentially contaminated with COVID-19 and other chemical and biological hazards.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, ability to don respirator and other personal protection equipment, provide technical support to outside responders, assess dangerous situations, and respond appropriately.
  • Assist in maintaining electronic database to record incidents and corrective actions. Maintain respiratory certification annually. Must be able to don and doff a wide range of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR), protective suit, and gloves.
  • Perform pick-ups and packaging activities related to hazardous waste and biological waste management. Deliver supplies to various campus locations to support increased biological waste activities. Conduct weekly inspections of hazardous waste and biological waste accumulation areas. Report findings to the EHS Director and take corrective action to ensure the university meets regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in a variety of tasks supporting other EHS departmental services and initiatives including, but not limited to development of Occupational Health & Safety Programs (OSHA), biological waste management, incident response, etc.
  • Respond to safety issues as they arise and provide information to employees, students, staff, and contractors regarding safety, particularly in Facilities and on the main campus.
  • Maintain certifications in International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines and regulations for shipment of biological substances.
  • Ensure biological shipments are documented, packaged, marked, and labeled appropriately. Ensure import/export permitting procedures are followed, when applicable. Electronically, track shipments to ensure viable arrival at destinations and determine cause of delays. Coordinate with appropriate personnel for shipments that are mixed substances (chemical, biological, or radioactive).


Requirements:
  • B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, or related science or A.S. and equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in research laboratory, safety department, or environmental compliance.
  • Capable of obtaining medical clearances for using respiratory protection necessary for HAZMAT response.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Must be able to obtain IATA and DOT hazardous materials shipping certifications.
  • Must be able to lift up to 55 pounds to shoulder height.
