JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Mechanical & Materials Engineering Department (MME) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks applicants for a faculty position in the physical metallurgy area at the associate or full professor level. Responsibilities for the position include serving as the Director of the Center for Heat Treating Excellence at WPI (https://wp.wpi.edu/chte/). The candidate will be expected to establish at WPI an active externally funded research program in areas of interest including (but not limited to) mechanical and thermal processing of materials and processing-structure-properties relationships. Consistent with WPI's reputation for balancing excellence in teaching and research, the candidate will also teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical and materials engineering. A PhD or equivalent in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering or a related area and extensive knowledge and experience in Heat Treating of Metals (Steels, Aluminum, Titanium and/or Super alloys) and Surface Engineering Processes is required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will:

  • Be qualified to support excellence in teaching both graduate and undergraduate students as well as conducting research and supervising graduate students in heat treating and surface engineering.

  • Be a well-respected physical metallurgist with in-depth knowledge of the thermodynamics, kinetics and phase transformations of heat treatment and surface engineering of steels and other alloys.

  • Be capable of leading WPI's Center for Heat Treating Excellence to support and develop industrial and academic partnerships associated with the Center's projects and programs.

  • Be capable of working with stakeholders in the heat-treating industry to create long term objectives, goals and programs for the Center aligned with industry needs.

  • Be capable of leading large interdisciplinary teams with a focus on materials processing and manufacturing.

    The Mechanical & Materials Engineering Department at WPI (http://www.wpi.edu/academics/me/) has 28 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 8 full-time teaching faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering and materials science to over 900 students. The department offers graduate degrees in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, and manufacturing engineering to over 250 graduate students. The department's annual externally sponsored research expenditures have exceeded $12M.
