JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Network Operations, ensure the satisfactory design, implementation, and operation of the WPI network, and facilitate its use by the WPI community.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, engineering, and implementation of the WPI data and voice network, including cloud architecture, the WPI Internet2 GigaPoP, and data centers.
  • Select, design, and lead implementation of best practices in design and operations.
  • Evaluate alternative technologies and architectures for the WPI network and related systems.
  • Assist the Director of Network Operations in maintaining the network architecture roadmap.
  • Assist the Director of Network Operations in the creation and oversight of SLAs and compliance monitoring for the network.
  • Evaluate and design network modifications to accommodate requests from various constituents, including research projects and security initiatives, while ensuring acceptable levels of risk management to production network services.
  • Provide oversight of full lifecycle maintenance of all network infrastructure, including vendor support, maintenance, runbooks, and performance monitoring.
  • Provide technical oversight and consultation of network and system configuration and operation to network and other IT projects.
  • Assist with technical specifications in physical plant renovations and expansions as they relate to the network and voice infrastructure.
  • Manage IP address space allocation and distribution.
  • Collaborate in support of network maintenance and support tools, including configuration management, monitoring, IPAM/DNS/DHCP, and cross connect databases
  • Author and maintain network design and architectural documentation.
  • Provide Tier 3 assistance and ticket escalation for Service Desk and other IT support staff.
  • Operate and maintain beta and lab test environments.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or other related field or 8-10 years relevant experience in similar or related work.
  • A solid grounding in routing protocols, including OSPF, BGP, MPLS, and VxLAN.
  • A thorough knowledge of IPv4/IPv6 and Ethernet networking.
  • Recent experience with Juniper, Aruba, Palo Alto, Ciena and A10 Network equipment preferable. Certifications in said technology preferred.
  • Experience with network cabling, including twisted pair copper and fiber optic.
  • Knowledge of network management and monitoring software, including experience in advanced network troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and written with network users and other IT Division team members.
