We anticipate hiring a tenure-track faculty member in the computing field starting Fall 2023. The faculty member will join the Computer Science department to strengthen the strategic interdisciplinary area of Data Science at WPI. Candidates should have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field, and the potential for excellence in teaching and research.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Computer Science Department includes over 35 full-time faculty across two buildings. Construction completed in 2022 for the newer of the two buildings, Unity Hall, a state-of-the-art academic facility which is the home of many interdisciplinary programs, including the Data Science program. Computer Science has over 1,050 undergraduates students, over 50 Ph.D. students, and over 150 students seeking master's-level degrees. In addition to joining Computer Science as a tenure-track faculty member, the new faculty will join the strong team of 18 Data Science faculty working on interdisciplinary research related to big data on real-world grand challenge problems with societal impact. Areas of interest for this position include, but are not limited to, large-scale data management, machine/deep learning for big data systems, distributed data systems, scalable AI, and big data analytics, with applications spanning broadly social computing, digital health, engineering, fraud detection, social media, cyber-physical systems, material sciences, social justice, learning sciences, cyber-security to urban computing.

Data Science is an interdisciplinary program that includes faculty in Computer Science, Mathematical Sciences, and the Business School. The Data Science program has undergone major growth since its inception in 2014 supported by the hiring of eleven full-time faculty in Data Science including in statistical learning, deep learning, big data, data mining, NLP, signal processing, information retrieval, AI and closely related disciplines. The signature Data Science program offers on-campus degree programs at all levels, including BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Data Science. Since Spring 2022 the Data Science program, along with other computational interdisciplinary programs, are housed in a brand new state-of-the-art academic building.
