Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) offers a wide range of summer programs focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for student in grades 4-12. Our academic programs bring over 1,000 students to campus. Our program offerings range in timeframe, type, and focus.

We offer programs such as aerospace engineering, biology, chemistry, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, and more! JOB DESCRIPTION

The Office of Pre-collegiate Outreach Programs is looking to hire two or three graduate students who are looking for a summer opportunity focused on pre-college programs. This position provides a professional experience that involves coordination of summer student staff training, participant orientation, program administration, residential life operations, student activities, and STEM outreach.

The graduate interns will work together to ensure a seamless summer of pre-college programs. All interns will supervise a group of undergraduate students, serve on the on-call schedule, and address behavioral and/or medical incidents. Each graduate student will be assigned as a lead in a certain area program development, logistics, and marketing and communication, but will be expected to support any/all facets of our summer programs.

Graduate students will be able to enhance their skills and prepare for a their first professional position. This position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, organization, good judgement, high level of adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. A successful intern will also exhibit a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and an interest to work with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in the development and supervision of WPI undergraduate Program Assistants (PA), and Residential Program Assistants (RPA).
  • Plan and implement summer staff training.
  • Update all staff manuals.
  • Coordinate orientations for all participants.
  • Complete all housing assignments for residential programs.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation, which includes going to the local hospital for transports.
  • Prepare materials for opening days such as ID cards, room keys, check-in packets, schedules, etc.
  • Assist with activities and vendor planning; be present at evening/weekend activities to assist.
  • Manage 10pm curfew check-ins for residential high school programs and conduct regular building checks.
  • Serve as the contact for all comings and goings of participants, including early arrivals, late departures, and off-campus release forms.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations in the office and with all summer programs.
  • Provide support and be present for all openings and closings of programs.
  • Serve as a resource for participants and undergraduate student staff.
  • Coordinate with a variety of WPI departments including Residential Services, Dining and Catering, Events, Facilities, Health Services, Student Activities, and Admissions.
  • Foster a positive, educational, and fun community; emphasize mutual respect and inclusiveness in residence halls and activities.
  • Understand WPI policies and procedures, as well as program specific policies; inform students and parents of these policies; enforce policies in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Participate in staff trainings, meetings, and one-on-ones.
  • Assist with administrative handling of online student registrations, applications, and support documents.
  • Provide excellent customer service via persons, phone, and email.
  • Be accessible via cell phone and email.
  • Other duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS:
  • Currently pursuing a Master's Degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, education, or a related area.
  • No other commitments during this this timeframe including internships, employment, or academic courses (unless it pertains to this internship).
  • Conditional offer pending a criminal background check.


COMPENSATION:
  • $7,000 stipend for the summer paid in bi-weekly increments.
  • On-campus housing in a single room within a suite.
  • A meal plan during the 4 weeks of pre-college programs.
  • Access to the on-campus Sports & Recreation Center
  • An on-campus parking pass
