Job Description

Grossmont College's backyard is Mission Trails Regional Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the United States. Mission Trails is home to more than 8,000 acres of natural and developed recreational sites and popular activities such as hiking, biking and exploring.

JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, the Dean will be responsible for the development, direction, supervision, and evaluation of the assigned set of the college's academic programs and/or college service areas, which include Exercise Science, Nutrition, Health, and Athletics.

Administrators will be assigned responsibility for a combination of day, evening, and weekend programs, on-campus and off site. Each instructional Dean assumes responsibility for some college-wide functions and is responsible for grants management in their areas. Managers will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited institution plus five years of achievement in management, supervision or leadership programs, departments or divisions within an institution of higher education, with emphasis in one or more of the areas to which the Dean position is assigned (Exercise Science, Nutrition, Health and Athletics).

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

1. The ability to advance the College's vision, mission, and values in the Exercise Science, Nutrition, Health, and Athletics Division's programs and services and within the institution.

2. Commitment to and support of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility in support of student success and retention.

3. Demonstrated sensitivity to, and an understanding of, students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; students who are differently abled, and students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

4. The ability to advance the College's strategic goals related to access, success, retention, eliminating equity gaps, and increasing equity in hiring in the Exercise Science, Nutrition, Health, and Athletics Division's programs and within the institution.

5. The ability to manage, evaluate and coordinate academic subject areas and student services in accordance with legal requirements, district policies, and sound instructional and student services principles and practices.

6. Experience or qualifications relevant to oversight of physical education, health education, athletics, and athletic support functions; background in physical education and coaching; experience managing or overseeing physical education facilities and equipment.

7. The ability to establish overall goals, objectives and plans; prepare reports and presentations; initiate and participate in overall program review and planning, including Student Learning Outcome (SLO) development and assessment, communicate statutes, district and college policies and philosophies to division staff.

8. The ability to support division faculty in curriculum planning and development; evaluate and recommend instructional materials, equipment, and facilities.

9. The ability to oversee and comply with the Constitution of the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A, PCAC, SCFA) sports supplements, and provide administrative support and supervision to 16 athletic teams during day, late afternoon, evening, holiday, and weekend on/off campus contests and activities (the Dean is required to attend specific sports events on and off-campus - football and other sports as specified).

10. The ability to perform the hiring, evaluation, and retention of assigned faculty, coaches, and staff according to statutes, Governing Board policy, and collective bargaining units; plan and coordinate orientation and in-service education (R1&R2, 3C2A) for professional development of program faculty, coaches, and staff.

11. The ability to prepare faculty teaching assignments, catalog material and schedules, and other program information as required; assign certificated and classified staff to work areas, hours and duties; orient and assist new personnel as needed.

12. The ability to prepare budgets and submit through appropriate channels for approval; monitor and control assigned program-operating budgets; initiate special fund requests; determine need and priority for capital equipment and materials.

13. The ability to serve as a member of district, site and/or other committees and task forces.

14. The ability to ensure responsiveness of assigned special programs and effective coordination with student services' functions to the overall needs of the campus, students, faculty and administrators.

15. Commitment to the community college concept, including the open door philosophy and a diverse curriculum for a heterogeneous student population.

16. The ability to coordinate and facilitate the resolution of student, instructor, and staff conflicts and problems.

17. The ability to perform related duties regarding assigned programs as necessary.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of the Education Code, Title 5, federal law - Title IX, and other administrative state and/or federal regulations and the ability to apply these regulations.
