Director, Medical Affairs - Emerging Viruses/COVID-19

Reporting to the lead of the Global Emerging Viruses (EV)/COVID-19 team, this role is a leadership position within the Medical Affairs organization, responsible for developing and driving the COVID-19 Global Medical Affairs Plan.

The key functions of this role will be to collaborate with internal and external customers involved in Emerging Viruses, specifically COVID-19, including the Foster City Medical Affairs team, the US Medical Affairs team, Scientific Communications, Medical Affairs Research, Commercial Strategy, Marketing, Value and Market Access, Clinical Research, Public Affairs, Government Affairs, Contracts/Finance, Pharmacology, Legal, and the field-based Medical Scientists.

Specific Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrate deep subject matter expertise regarding Gilead EV/COVID-19, remdesivir clinical trials and clinical use, pipeline, and competitive products
  • Develop strategies and implementation plans to define and address unmet research and medical needs within the patient populations affected
  • Direct and manage one or more Gilead colleagues on the Global EV/COVID-19 team.
  • Prepare presentation materials and present scientific data at internal meetings and external advisory boards
  • Serve as an information resource and trainer to Gilead colleagues, medical educational stakeholders, grants partners, and Gilead-sponsored/collaborative study investigators
  • Support EV/COVID-19 data generation activities through:
    • Critical review of global investigator-sponsored research, Ph 3b and Ph4 study proposals as a member or chair of MAST committees
    • Review abstracts and/or manuscripts
    • Communicate Gilead's commitment to scientific excellence in EV/COVID-19 through research and education
  • Provide medical and scientific leadership and support at key scientific meetings involving EV/COVID-19
  • Provide strategic input to Global Medical Affairs Plan and Regional Medical Affairs Plans (POAs)
  • Serve on Independent Medical Education (IMED) Committee to review and give medical perspective on IMED proposals
  • Oversee medical and scientific review of promotional materials for PRC
  • Other activities, as assigned, to support EV/COVID-19 Medical Affairs


Essential Skills:
  • Ability to think strategically and translate that strategy into an actionable work plan
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal, relationship-building and negotiating communication skills
  • Experience and comfort presenting scientific information in educational forums
  • Excellent organizational skills to support project planning across multiple activities, anticipate and prioritize workload
  • Excellent teamwork skills. Organized; attention to detail and able to meet timelines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to identify and understand complex issues and problems and identify and query key findings from study data and publications
  • Experience in clinical patient care (general or subspecialty, specifically Pulmonology, Infectious Diseases, or Critical Care Medicine) is highly desirable.
  • Experience in developing effective abstracts, manuscripts, posters and slides and presenting at scientific meetings
  • Must be fully cognizant and adhere to regulatory and legal (Business Conduct) requirements for clinical trials and other Medical Affairs activities; thorough knowledge of FDA regulations, ICH guidelines and GCPs governing the conduct of clinical trials
  • Able to work with a level of autonomy and independence


Required Experience:
  • M.D., PharmD., D.O., or PhD (biological or pharmaceutical sciences) > 5 years clinical experience
  • Industry experience in Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, or Research or success in a similar role outside of the biotech/pharmaceutical industry preferred
