Assistant Research Professor

Biology & Biotechnology Department

Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI

The Department of of Biology and Biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks applicants for an Assistant Research Professor in the general areas of computational biology and cellular imaging. Responsibilities for this position include the development of analytical and computational models to investigate the movement of elastic structures in the viscous or over-damped limit. The main goals of the research are to develop novel methods to understand the role of molecular motors on centrosome clustering in mitotic cells. For candidates with experimental cellular imaging experience, there are opportunities to complete experiments.

WPI is a diverse campus of learners passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity. We are looking for candidates who can support our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This is a research position housed in Biology and Biotechnology, but joint between the Manning Lab in Biology and Biotechnology and the Olson Lab in Mathematical Sciences. Both departments have expansive research programs with expertise in computational and experimental approaches to investigate questions in cellular biology.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to an existing research project focusing on centrosome movement during mitosis. A combined experimental-theoretical approach is being used where computational models are simulated using high performance computing systems at WPI. After joining the project, we expect the successful candidate to contribute to the development of code for simulations, analysis of modeling frameworks, and completing additional experimental imaging studies. In addition, we expect weekly presentations with research updates and a manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

WPI's reputation as a rigorous and innovative university rests on the shoulders of its faculty. A highly selective, private technological university and one of the nation's first, WPI believes that when great minds work together, great advances follow. At WPI the boundaries to multidisciplinary collaboration are low. Faculty members, students, and other partners work together on the real-world projects and purposeful research that are hallmarks of the WPI experience. WPI is consistently ranked among the top 70 research institutions by US News & World Report. Located one hour west of Boston, the university's campus is in Worcester, Massachusetts, a thriving 21st century college city recognized as a growing hub of scientific and technological innovation.

Qualified applicants should submit (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a cover letter, and (3) contact information for at least three references. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
