JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position, at the Assistant Professor level, in the general areas of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Statistics. The successful applicant is expected to develop a robust, externally funded research program where impactful research directly applicable in the fields of epidemiology, global health, and public policy will be given preference. Responsibilities for this position include participation in a new Global Health initiative at WPI while contributing to the educational and research mission of the Department of Mathematical Sciences (home department where tenure will be evaluated).

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has over 40 faculty and postdocs. Our undergraduate programs in Mathematical Sciences and Actuarial Mathematics have over 200 students and our graduate programs have approximately 100 students. At the graduate level, we have several master's programs (Applied Statistics, Applied Mathematics, and Industrial Mathematics) and we offer PhDs in Mathematical Sciences and in Statistics. The department has a strong reputation for its cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and for its successful programs addressing mathematical and statistical problems in industry, with a Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (CIMS). Building on the success of faculty in Mathematical Sciences participating in interdisciplinary programs such as Data Science and Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, the successful candidate for this position is expected to engage with the new Global Health initiatives on campus. In particular, the Global Health MS program has a concentration in Analytics and Modeling in Global Health and is a collaborative, project-based program taught by interdisciplinary faculty representing social science, global studies, computer science, and data science.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program leading to national and international recognition, teach courses in Mathematical Sciences at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, teach a course in Epidemiology, participate in the Global Health MS program, participate in WPI's signature project-based curriculum, and contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and the profession. Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field prior to appointment at WPI. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in one or more of the areas of biostatistics, epidemiological modeling, and/or global health.
